The Society of Collision Repair Specialists (SCRS) recognizes that there are many legitimate operations and services our technicians provide that go unrecognized in the estimate development and final billing processes. The purpose of this document is to aid repair facility personnel in formulating the most accurate repair plan in the estimate preparation process, to minimize the need or expense of a supplement. This document is intended to be used as a guide to develop and maintain processes performed in your repair facility, and serves as a reminder of steps that may be performed during the repair process. This document does not suggest, or promote, that your shop can or should charge for each item listed; and is only intended to be a reminder for repair operations that are performed in your facility.
SCRS Compiles Documentation on Clearcoat Application (Sep 2014)
As part of the update, SCRS posed the following two questions:
- What is your company’s recommended procedure for applying clearcoat to qualify for a lifetime refinish warranty?
- Is there an acceptable procedure to tape, melt or blend clearcoat mid-panel, and achieve a warrantable refinish?

3M has updated their Standard Operating Procedures for 2014 which have been expanded and improved to include the most up-to-date information on processes and techniques. Additionally, they address the growing area of aluminum repair with 21 new process charts. You will find information on metal and plastic repair, sanding, paint finishing and car clean-up. EPA: Automotive Refinishing Partnership The DfE Program is working with the auto body/refinishing (collision repair) industry and career/technical schools to increase awareness of the health and environmental concerns associated with refinishing activities and to encourage the use of best practices and safer, cleaner, more efficient practices and technologies. OSHA Respirator Training Videos The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has posted a series of 17 videos to help workers learn about the proper use of respirators on the job. A Critical Shortage Every year, more than 21,500 collision repair technicians leave the industry, a trend that has increased steadily since 1995. An additional 31,000 technicians leave their current employers for another job within the industry. The average age of collision repair technicians is 38.7, compared with 35.5 in 1995, and more than a quarter of the existing workforce plan to either retire or change jobs in the next 12 months. These numbers add up to a critical shortage for the collision industry. Even with 80,000 young people enrolled in collision repair classes, there will not be enough qualified graduates to meet growing labor demands. Collision repair training programs graduate only 10 to 15% of their students, which means that only 10,000 of those currently enrolled will achieve a certificate, associate degree, or other formal designation. This year alone, over half of the collision industry hiring needs will be unmet, leaving managers to hire first-time workers with minimal or no training.
